Municipal Election Candidates Vie for Your Vote

In Their Own Words Part One

Oct 6, 2021 | 9:54 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Municipal Election in Medicine Hat will feature the largest number of candidates in 20 years.

With so many names on the ballot, CHAT News Today has created a segment called “In Their Own Words” which is designed to help residents make an informed decision at the polls.

Candidates were asked for either a 60-second video or short written submission on why they believe Hatters should vote for them.

These are the candidates’ submissions CHAT News has received so far. More will be added as we receive them.

“I decided to run because City Hall could not decide to hold a vote on a mask bylaw last year. I did not care what they decided, I just wanted them to hold a vote.

When I started my campaign February 2, I wanted to be a voice on council that had the ability and the will to speak up and speak out. I’m not involved with anyone on council or in City Hall, none of my family works for the City, I have the freedom to speak out. I have nothing to lose. I have no investment properties, no businesses, no relatives that will benefit from me being on council and even if they did, I’ll do what’s best for the city, not individuals.

I truly have no ulterior motive.

I asked my kids what they thought my qualifications were. My son wrote quite a lot but I think I like this part the best: “You are a rational and fair person. A thinker. A strong advocate for those who you advocate for, but only if their cause is just.”

I’ve been honoured to have the support of this community since first being elected in 2001.

In that time, I have been the Chair of standing committees like: Corporate Services, Development & Infrastructure, Energy, Audit and the Administrative & Legislative Review Committee.

My wife Pamela and I have been married for 26 years and we have 4 beautiful children. My day job is working proudly as a Principal with the Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education.

Like you, I care deeply about this community. I firmly believe that my core values of integrity, honesty and hardwork put me in a really good position to continue to serve the citizens of Medicine Hat.

I commit to championing and promoting a vibrant Medicine Hat with an economic climate that supports good jobs in our community.

I believe in keeping our utilities publicly owned, with fair tax and utility rates.

We must maintain strong fire and police services to enhance public safety.

Likewise, I will continue to promote a municipal government that works steadfastly to support the business sector.

The fact is, we all desire to live harmoniously in an inclusive community that is accessible and free of unnecessary barriers.

The city of Medicine Hat has so much to be appreciative of – but I want to make it even better. To that end, if I am privileged to have your support for re-election, I promise to continue to work tirelessly on your behalf.
