Crews battling fire north of city

Oct 4, 2021 | 6:21 PM

Update: Thick black smoke billowing upwards could be seen by residents in Redcliff and the North of the city just before 6p.m. on Monday as fire crews worked diligently to put out the blaze.

Acting Platoon Chief Jason Van Dam said 11 personnel and six fire trucks descended to PHF Steel and Recycling to put out the blaze located in a scrapyard. The fire was contained to one area, according to Van Dam.

” The property owner was on site with equipment, and once the fire was contained to the pile, we had him take the vehicles that were on fire and spread them out so we could extinguish them better,” he said.

No one was hurt in the blaze.

But Van Dam said some of the crew members had to redeploy to Strathcona park, while the other blaze was burning to extinguish a grass fire in the area.

A total of five trucks and 12 personnel battled that blaze which is believed to have been ignited by fireworks.

” We just want to remind everyone, that fireworks are not permitted in the city and being that it is so dry, it is still very dangerous for grass fires, as indicated down in Strathcona this evening.”
