MEDICINE HAT, AB- Twelve-year-old Jaxen Bouman seems like an ordinary kid. But when he’s not busy at school, Bouman is in front of the camera, making videos with his mom Natalee for his YouTube channel Half of that Flaaffy.

It all started with Pokeman videos. But his latest video on the municipal election has been turning heads across the city, garnering over 500 views in just a few days.

“I wanted to research all these candidates because I was actually sitting in my room watching YouTube, and then I heard my mom tell my dad, ‘ oh did you hear there are like 38 candidates running in the election this year. So I thought that would be really cool because there is so many candidates,” he said.

And those candidates, like Alison Knodel have been impressed with Bouman’s work.

“I think he is doing great work educating people on what is going on, and I think it is really special that he is making it his own and that he is excited about what is happening with the upcoming municipal election. As a teacher, it is really special to see a kid take a leadership role, and he may not even know that he is a leader right now. But he is a leader. He is impacting and influencing people in such a positive way,” Knodel said.

Even Mayor Ted Clugston gave the budding YouTuber some accolades.

“What a nice young gentleman he was, and this is what we are always trying to do is, we are always trying to get the next generation interested in politics to become active, to become involved, and what better way than a passion of his,” Clugston said.

Both Clugston and Knodel, along with a few others are taking part in his next latest video. The video combines municipal election platforms with his love of Pokemon.

“The video is going to be catching politicians, and then I am going to be interviewing them in Police Point Park,” he said.

But remembering what to say once the director says action isn’t as easy as you think.

“Some people would say politicians are actors. But no acting is not in my future. Perhaps four more years as mayor but that’s about it,” Clugston said.

As for Bouman, he’s hoping to keep growing his channel by making more content
