Canadians to take part in virtual Terry Fox Run

MEDICINE HAT,AB- Across Canada, residents are expected to lace up their running shoes and get moving today in honor of Terry Fox and to raise money for cancer research.

Shortly after undergoing cancer treatment losing his leg to osteogenic sarcoma, 18-year-old Fox embarked on a journey to run across Canada. According to the Terry Fox Foundation, he ran close to 42 kilometers a day, through the Maritimes, Quebec and Ontario. But after 143 days of running, Fox had to stop after cancer appeared in his lungs. He died on June 28, 1981, at just 22 years old.

Fred Fox is Terry’s older brother. He told CHAT News, that since Terry’s passing his legacy only continues to grow, with runs taking place in cities across Canada and in schools.

“ His goal was to make a difference in others’ lives by raising money for cancer research and truly wanting to impact cancer research in Canada and here we are years later, and Terry’s dream and goal has done that. He said when he was in Southern Ontario he said even if I don’t finish we need others to continue it has to keep going,” Fox said.

Last year $17 million was raised for cancer research through the Terry Fox Run.
