MEDICINE HAT, AB – If you logged on to the City of Medicine Hat’s website today you were in for a bit of a surprise.

The city unveiled a new look for its website, one that’s been several months in the making.

The city has redesigned medicinehat.ca to change how it does business with residents.

Project manager Craig Fruin says a citizen-facing digital strategy and the new myMH portal are at the centre of the new site.

“The myMH portal is really our dashboard into all our online services that we are providing here at the city,” says Fruin. “So taking first steps here, the base functionality to allow us to get residents to log into accounts and really kind of streamline how they want to engage with us at the city. So they can customize their view and get to what they want to in a very ready fashion.”

He thinks people will be impressed with the site’s ease of use.

Colleen Graham, the city’s director of corporate communications, agrees.

“It’s going to be much easier to find what they’re looking for,” she says. “The old site was built according to our departmental structure. So you had to go to a certain department area to find what you were looking for and if you weren’t familiar with the department structure that presents challenges.”

More than 60 per cent of the city’s website traffic comes from mobile devices, so a mobile responsive design was also key to the revamped website.

Graham says when you visit this website on your smartphone it’s going to be just as easy to navigate as it would be from your desktop.

She adds that as with any new website it is a work in progress and they welcome feedback from the community.
