MEDICINE HAT, AB – A plaque to mark the traditional Metis land near Saratoga Park will be unveiled this week by the City of Medicine Hat and Miywasin Friendship Centre.

Aaron Nelson, manager of cultural experiences and events for the City of Medicine Hat, says it’s important the lands be recognized and celebrated to build an inclusive and diverse future.

“We want to interpret this area so our community can appreciate the people who settled here before us, their stories and their contributions to our community,” he said.

Brenda Mercer with Miywasin Friendship Centre said the area is significant to the Metis people who first called Medicine Hat home and the “evening will be about sharing memories and stories about Saratoga Park.”

The plaque unveiling ceremony will take place on Thursday at 6 p.m. Parking is available in the two gravel lots located at the bottom of Scholten Hill. Additional parking is available at the Saratoga Dog Park. The ceremony and celebration will take place further down the Saratoga Park Trail in the nearby clearing.

The public is invited to the plaque unveiling.
