Five residents, four groups

City announces Community Spirit Awards recipients

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The City of Medicine Hat is celebrating our community and the people and groups that make it what it is.

Five residents and four community organizations have been chosen as Community Spirit Awards recipients for 2021.

“The Community Spirit Awards are the city’s way of recognizing and saying thank you to volunteers which help weave the fabric of our community,” said Kris Samraj, councillor for civic functions.

The 2021 Community Spirit Award recipients are:

  • Derek Whitson – Community Inclusion
  • Helen Snortland – Compassion
  • Medicine Hat Curling Club – Compassion
  • Gerry Ehlert – Environment
  • Medicine Hat Interpretive Program – Environment
  • Medicine Hat College Rattlers Athletics – Sports/Recreation
  • Nicholas Samuelson – Volunteerism
  • Prairie Gleaners Society – Volunteerism
  • Martha Munz Gue – Award of Excellence, Heart of Medicine Hat

In a release, the city says “the awards are presented every two years to individuals and groups whom the community believes enhance the quality of life in Medicine Hat through their dedication, activities, and accomplishments in the areas of arts/culture, sports/recreation, environment, volunteerism, community inclusion, community service and civic pride.”

Based on nominations received, a committee made up of representatives from the community vibrancy board recommends recipients to city council.

The Community Spirit Awards will be presented on Oct. 20, 2021.
