MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Safeway store at the Medicine Hat mall is being remade, and will become a FreshCo store in 2022.

Safeway’s parent company, Sobeys announced plans to redevelop the store, which will result in some job losses.

It says over the coming weeks, the company will be working closely with employees and their unions to ensure the terms of their collective agreement are met.

Sobeys says many factors are taken into consideration when deciding to close a store.

As part of the decision, the Safeway gas bar on the northeast corner of the mall parking lot will close permanently in January.

The pharmacy will remain open in a temporary location in the mall while the grocery store undergoes renovations and construction.

The new FreshCo store will open with a pharmacy.

The company does not give a date for when the new store will be open.

FreshCo was launched in 2010 as a discount grocery retailer, with 123 stores from B.C. to Ontario.
