Concerns for alcohol dependent after closure of liquor store in Gleichen

Aug 31, 2021 | 3:02 PM

GLEICHEN, AB – RCMP are asking business owners to exercise judgment when selling certain products following the closure of the closure of the Gleichen Hotel and Liquor Store.

The hotel and liquor store were closed Monday following an inspection by Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis, Wheatland Fire Department and local health inspectors.

“With the closure of this establishment, there are real health concerns for persons with alcohol dependency and substance abuse issues,” said Sgt. Scott Mercer of the Gleichen RCMP in a statement Monday. “Police are requesting responsible business owners in the area to refrain from selling like intoxicating substances such as hand sanitizer, rubbing alcohol, aerosol etc. without proper judgement. These substances can cause significant health risks if consumed.”

The statement goes on to say that RCMP will endeavour to work alongside Siksika Health and Addiction Services on any community-based strategy that reduces public harm.
