Police investigating bear spray attack on McCoy Grade 12 students

MEDICINE HAT, AB- It was supposed to mark the start of their grade 12 year. But for dozens of students at Monsignor McCoy high school,it ended in stinging pain.

The Medicine Hat Police Service is now investigating after students attending an unsanctioned graduation event were allegedly attacked with bear spray.

According to the students who did not want to be identified for fears of repercussions, the incident occurred in a backyard residence in the Somerset area, at around 1 a.m. on Saturday.

The students told CHAT News that a person got kicked out of the graduation party, and then returned, and started deploying the bear mace.

“ Everyone was all like okay, and then the next minute, it was instantly everyone was just coughing, puking, running screaming. It was crazy. It was really, really, scary,” one student said.

The Medicine Hat Police Service said no charges have been laid and the investigation is ongoing.

The students said they were at the party to mark the end of RAMBO, their main graduation event prior to the start of school.

“It was so fun, and I just feel like our memory is kind of ruined now,”

“It’s like good memories but also bad at the same time because that is all we think about now. We think about that night and it is all just bad.” one student said,

The students said over 80 people were at the party.

Police and EMS attended the scene to treat their eyes with saline, and to ensure everyone was okay.
