Aug 28, 2021 | 11:07 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB- There will be fewer psychiatrists at Medicine Hat Regional Hospital for the time being. CHAT News has learned that three of the five psychiatrists who work at the hospital will be leaving their positions or going on a leave of absence.

In a statement, Alberta Health Services said they are actively recruiting to fill the vacancies, and support is still available for people in crisis.

“ Two psychiatrists remain available to support services at MHRH, with another five in the community. AHS is looking at opportunities to increase collaboration with other specialties, including family medicine, to triage and provide a broader spectrum of care for patients in need,” Alberta Health Services said in a statement.

The health authority added that any patient that goes to the hospital in need of urgent mental health care will be assessed and provided the treatment required to manage their condition.

The departure of the psychiatrists comes as the city continues to deal with a mental health crisis.

Alberta Health Services said anyone seeking mental health treatment options in Medicine Hat and area can call the 24/7 telephone support, through the Mental Health Helpline, which provides mental health support at 1-877-303-2642.

People can also contact Health Link, which connects individuals with appropriate local mental health supports, 24/7, at 811.
