MEDICINE HAT, AB – You can wind down your summer by experiencing a wide selection of outdoor activities at the first Medicine Hat Recreation Experience.

It takes place at Echo Dale Regional Park from 2-7 p.m. on Saturday. You can catch a free ride there from the Esplanade aboard the Sunshine Trolley.

“When you arrive there will be a handful of activities and they’re all kind of staggered throughout the time and some will be ongoing throughout the day,” says co-organizer Dina Jubrak. “We have water activities planned like trying kayaking or paddleboarding for the first time.”

There will also be an ongoing hula hoop session, Bike Medicine Hat will provide tune-ups and teach people about the trails in the area, and Not-for-profit organizations will be on-hand to explain what they do.

The Miywasin Friendship Centre will be making bannock and there will be drum circles and conversation circles, adds Jubrak.

She says the conversation circles are a continuation of work that has been done to connect the community throughout the summer.

“The whole series of events that we organized this year and including the Medicine Hat Recreation Experience, was really around diversity and inclusion,” she says. “So where are the opportunities to present and showcase the diversity in our city as well as invite people who usually don’t feel engaged to participate in the activities.”

She said the same questions that were asked earlier in the summer at events like Hula from the Heart and Community Kitchens will be discussed again this Saturday to see if there’s been any change.

The conversations will continue at other events in the future.

Jubrak says COVID safety measures will be in place. Masks will be available and sanitizing and hand washing stations will be set up. Shared equipment will be sanitized in between uses.

She adds people are asked to be mindful of their own comfort zone and respect that of other people.
