NDP wants more support for students returning to class

Aug 25, 2021 | 12:39 PM

The Alberta Opposition is urging Premier Jason Kenney and his United Conservative government to get behind supports for students returning to school at a time when COVID-19 still has a grip on the province.

The NDP wants a mental health professional in every Alberta school this year and rapid tests readily available for all K to 6 schools.

The party is also calling for the government to restore reporting parameters for COVID-19 cases within the school system.

The province announced recently that there will be no requirement for Alberta Health Services or schools to alert others of positive cases.

There will also be no province-wide mask mandate for students and staff, although schools can make their own rules.

Medicine Hat Public School Division is requiring masks be worn by all students and staff in common areas and as they move about the classrooms.

The Medicine Hat Catholic and Prairie Rose divisions will not require masks in school buildings.

The NDP says students have faced a lot of upheaval over the last 18 months as they shifted between in-class and at-home learning.

Many are also facing challenges at home due to financial hardship or loss of a loved one.
