Candidate signs for federal election pop up as election called for September

Aug 15, 2021 | 5:05 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Hours after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called a federal election, election signs have already popped up throughout the city.

Signs for Conservative MP Glen Motz are out on Dunmore Road. His campaign office on Carry Drive is expected to open tomorrow at 10 a.m. according to his campaign team.

A federal election started this morning. The election will occur Sept. 20. The campaign period will be 36 days, the minimum requirement for an election campaign to take place.

Critics, including opposition leader Erin O’Toole have been criticizing the timing of the decision, given the country is in a pandemic. Municipal elections are also near for many communities.

Taking to the streets, many Hatters were unaware of the just-called federal election and did not want to weigh in, but some said they were not pleased.

“We are not ready it is just a waste of money,” one man told CHAT News.

“We already know what the outcome is going to be and there is no reason to have it,” he added.

On Facebook, people also questioned the timing of the decision.

“What a useless waste of time and money…and don’t get me started on an unnecessary election,” said one man on Facebook.

“It won’t help because the east will put him back in just a waste of money,” another man said on Facebook
