Sunshine Skillet returns online, will benefit food bank

This year, the two groups have partnered to combine the two and revive the Sunshine Skillet online, which is also a food bank fundraiser.

“It’s a virtual at-home program where you can access local chefs and cook with them and also receive a box of local ingredients to cook with your family at home, says Melissa Mullis, director of community relations for the food bank.

Mullis says that for $100 families get a box of local ingredients and fresh produce. Half of the proceeds will go to the food bank.

The boxes can be picked up on Friday. On Saturday videos will be posted online so you can follow along as local chefs make meals from those same ingredients.

“What we love about this environment, A, is the collaboration between Medicine Hat and District Food Bank and Tourism Medicine Hat but not only that, if you just look on the website the list of local producers that have come together for this, that have given free ingredients or given support financially towards this,” says Mullis. “The community collaboration is my favourite part about this whole thing.

The Sunshine Skillet website lists three featured chefs – Lula Abdela of Fatuma’s Ethiopian Cafe, Camp Cookhouse’s Alex Bruveris and Kristine Dalzell of Zucchini Blossom.

If you don’t want to cook yourself you can buy a box and donate it to the food bank for one of its client families.

Mullis says about half of the 200 tickets have been sold.
