REDCLIFF, AB – A GoFundMe page has been created to help with the funeral costs of the Redcliff man who drowned in the South Saskatchewan River on the weekend.

Emergency crews received the report of a possible drowning on Saturday around 6 p.m.

RCMP confirm the deceased body was found in the river by police and the Medicine Hat Aquatics team at around 6:50 p.m. Sunday.

According to witnesses who spoke to police, the man tried to cross the river near Redcliff River Valley Park, but experienced difficulty near the halfway point.

A friend tried to rescue the man, but he was last seen going under the water.

The identity of the victim has not been released, and he’s identified only as Geoffrey on the GoFundMe.

He’s described as someone who loved and adored his family and friends and will be dearly missed by those who knew him and loved him. He leaves behind an 11-year-old son, his parents and siblings.

Nearly $2,500 has been donated as of this afternoon.
