MEDICINE HAT, AB – Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede officials have confirmed the horse that suffered a medical event during Thursday night’s rodeo has died.

The Stampede says it’s the first death of an animal in rodeo competition in at least half a decade.

The incident happened during the steer wrestling competition. The horse was not involved in the event itself and was standing nearby. The horse collapsed and suffered convulsions while the crowd watched on between heats.

There is still no word on what caused the medical event for the horse.

General manager Kara Brake confirms they are debriefing as a board to review their protocols for events like these.
