TABER, AB – Listening to her mother paid off for one Taber woman.

“My mom and I were talking and she said, ‘You should go and buy a lottery ticket. You could win $70 million!’” says Julia Wurtz. “I kind of laughed at her and sarcastically said, ‘Ok, I’ll buy one. I guess I could use $70 million.’”

Wurtz won $1 million on the June 15 draw Lotto Max draw.

She says she’ll take some time deciding what to do with the winnings.

“The most important thing for me is making sure my kids have financial security in the future,” she said. “So, I’m going to put most of the money into savings for their education and whatever else might come up.”

A new car might also be in her future, she says.

Wurtz bought the ticket the day before the draw from Johnson Drugs in Taber and checked her ticket at the same store a few days later.

“I scanned my ticket in-store and I couldn’t believe it,” she said. “I was joking about winning a lot of money and it actually happened – I won a million dollars!”

“I called my mom to tell her and she didn’t believe me,” she laughed. “I don’t think she’ll ever stop saying: ‘I told you so!’”

Wurtz won her million-dollar prize by matching one of the 64 Maxmillions drawn on June 15. Her winning numbers were 4, 8, 13, 31, 40, 41 and 50.
