Carry Drive trail a vital link for city’s network

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Medicine Hat’s already lengthy trail network is about to get a little bit longer.

A three-metre wide multi-use trail along Carry Drive will add almost three kilometres to the 115 kilometres of trail the city already boasts.

The 2.8 km trail will start at Dunmore Road and go to the top of Scholten Hill. That will connect to the already existing trail that goes down Scholten Hill and along South Railway Street. From there it links with another trail being built alongside the railyard.

City of Medicine Hat planning engineer Sandeep Pareek says the two are important projects.

“You’ll get a connectivity that goes from Dunmore Road all the way to downtown and most of the trail it provides you a active mode of transportation so it improves the lifestyle,” he says. “People have an alternate choice of transportation and it helps with maybe in the future it will help with more people biking and being out.”

Work begins this week and is expected to be finished around mid-September.

Pareek says a trail along Carry Drive was called for in the city’s cycling masterplan about 10 years ago.

He says no major traffic disruptions are expected and asks people drive with caution in the area.

The trail work is being done under the COVID-19 Resilience funding stream under the existing Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP).
