Election signs popping up along city roads

Signs of the fall civic election sprouting up

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Three months from today, we will know who will make up the next city council in Medicine Hat.

But even though election day is still 91 days away, the signs of the coming vote are popping up across the city.

The city website says there are 17 candidates who have filed nomination papers to run for city council, and three more have filed to seek the mayor’s chair.

Nominations won’t close until noon on Sept. 20, but many candidates have already started spiking lawns and boulevards with their election signs.

Medicine Hat College political science instructor Jim Groom says this far ahead of the election, it’s important to get your volunteers energized and putting out signs is a good way to do that — even at the risk of becoming part of the landscape by voting day.

“It does help the campaign a little bit, but it does offer the missed opportunity to become part of the landscape,” according to Groom.

“But on the other hand, if you even notice it a few times that name recognition may be what drives you in the election,” says Groom.

Groom says putting signs in the best location is also important, noting that signs on a front lawn may be more effective than one placed along a roadside.

The vote for public and separate school boards and municipal councils will be Oct. 18.
