Local riders back on track, need a bigger ramp

MEDICINE HAT, AB – BMX riders are back on track.

Local athletes made their way back on the Hat’s course after more than a year of not being able to train as a group.

The club welcomed new and returning athletes this season but as the club grows, upgrades are needed.

The current starting ramp is two metres high and for the last three years, the club has been fundraising for improvements.

But they’re still short of their goal.

A five-metre ramp would be game-changing for the whole track and the riders. Greg and Cathy Oram say a five-metre starting gate would allow the city to host national and international races.

“I like this track because it’s our home track and it’s also a big track,” Greg, a young BMX racer said. “But I’d say we do need a bigger start hill because it’s pretty small.”

His mom agrees.

“The kids from Medicine Hat are at a little bit of a disadvantage because we don’t have that large of a hill and they go to their first provincial race and their eyes are just like a deer in the headlights because they’ve never seen a hill that big before.”
