Local Pride association celebrates pride month, works all year long

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Pride Association of Southeast Alberta works year-round to create an open and safe community for all.

It also works to educate people about gender identity and sexuality and promote unity, inclusion, and awareness through different events.

“It’s really about educating people about who we are, what our community is, breaking down the barriers,” Kaleigh McArthur, chair of the local association, said.

The Pride association also gives people a chance to express who they are. Events coordinator Ellie Moore says everyone deserves to be able to be themselves.

She says June is important because spending a whole month celebrating Pride is one step closer to equality.

“I feel like people still aren’t completely comfortable with the thought that there’s people out there who are different than them and different than what they think a person should be,” Moore said.

The association is hosting a Queer Cookout on June 28 at Kin Coulee Park. from 6 to 9 p.m. Once the sun sets, the teepee will be lit up in rainbow colours.
