Vincent Massey students hop on Sunshine Trolley for scavenger hunt

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The wheels on the trolley went round and round today, taking a Vincent Massey kindergarten class on a unique ride around the city.

Thanks to a partnership with Tourism Medicine Hat, teacher Stephanie Funk and her students rode the Sunshine Trolley this morning for a scavenger hunt.

Students had to spot buildings they would normally visit on field trips and other sights in Medicine Hat.

“There’s a bunch of places that they need to find,” Funk explained before hopping aboard. “The hospital, the fire station, places that we may have gone to visit but couldn’t go to but at least we can talk about who works there. There’s some traffic signs on there that ties into what we need to do in kindergarten, all things that are curriculum-linked.”

Student Liam Wood said they’d be finding police officers, the police station and bridges. He was also excited about slushes and stopping somewhere for snacks.

Field trips have been hard to plan this school year due to COVID-19 public health restrictions.

Teachers have had to think outside the box to find creative outings that can be tied into the curriculum.

Funk said the trolley ride is a safe option, on their own and able to keep a distance from others.

“I hope it’s a different experience for them, something they’ve never done before,” she added. “I hope that it’s fun for them and that they see some different places that maybe they haven’t been before and stir up some conversations.”

The Sunshine Trolley will start its public trips on July 2.
