Starting June 23 for about five weeks

Temporary closure of Finlay Bridge again this summer

Jun 16, 2021 | 11:13 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Finlay Bridge will be closed for about five weeks beginning on June 23.

The city says the closure of the intersection at Second Street NE and Second Avenue NE is needed as construction on the Brier Park Gravity Bypass project in Riverside moves to its next stage.

The project to install a new sanitary sewer trunkline in Riverside will divert sewage flow from the northwest part of the city (Box Springs, Brier Park, Redcliff) to the newly renovated lift station on the north bank of the South Saskatchewan River near Police Point Park.

Construction began with work in the Brier Park area on Saamis Drive NW in 2019 and continued through 2020 in the Parkview area near Altawana Drive NE.

The project also includes some work on the natural gas distribution system and electrical systems in the area in order to take advantage of synergies between the scope and location of the work by multiple city departments, says the city.

Full details on the project are available on the website.

Finlay Bridge was closed in 2020 for resurfacing and repairs. The City of Medicine Hat says it tries to coordinate project work in a way that avoids repetitive disruptions in a particular location, but the intersection in question could not be closed during last year’s bridge maintenance so that construction vehicles and materials could access the bridge.

Motorists are reminded to obey all traffic signs and detours related to ongoing construction.
