MEDICINE HAT, AB – Two Community Foundations in Alberta recently announced more than $500,000 in funding for 14 projects across southern Alberta.

The Community Foundation of Southeastern Alberta and the Red Deer & District Community Foundation awarded the money earlier this month.

The funding is part of the first round of the federal government’s Canada Healthy Communities Initiative. The program is designed to build safer spaces and ensure a higher quality of life by helping communities adapt to the challenges presented by COVID-19.

Locally, REDI Enterprises Society received $65,600 to support digital access to community for persons with disabilities.

As well, the Brooks & District Museum & Historical Society received $20,821 to support a WiFi Hotspot Lending project.

“Public spaces are the glue to our communities: they enable a feeling of belonging and of social cohesion. They are a big part of what makes communities safe, vibrant, and connected,” said Sue Edwards, executive director of the Community Foundation of Southeastern Alberta, in a release. “As southern Alberta faces increased isolation due to COVID-19, these projects from the Canada Healthy Communities Initiative will help our community to connect safely and will benefit the mental and physical well-being of our residents.”
