Photographers snap away for unique cloud pictures

MEDICINE HAT, AB – A unique cloud formation over Medicine Hat last night caught the attention of a lot of photographers.

Thank you to everyone who sent in pictures.

It looks to be a cumulus cloud, also known as an anvil cloud, one which has reached the level of stratospheric stability and has formed the characteristic flat, anvil-top shape.

These clouds can be powerful. If the correct atmospheric conditions are met, they can grow into a supercell storm.

This cloud may be a single-cell thunderstorm or one cell in a multicellular thunderstorm.

Cumulus clouds are capable of producing severe storm conditions for a short amount of time.
