Stampede’s GM excited for full day of July 1 events

Jun 14, 2021 | 4:34 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede has a full day of events planned for this year’s Canada Day celebrations.

This is the first time the Stampede is organizing the July 1 festivities for the community. Stampede took over after the Canada Day committee dissolved last year.

“We’re super excited,” says general manager Kara Brake. “It’s something new for us obviously but we’re really excited to be able to do something for the community and have them back to the grounds safely and be able to offer some entertainment.”

A pancake breakfast will start the day from 8-10 a.m.

In the afternoon the grounds will host activities and fun for all ages, including live music, axe throwing, cultural activities and more.

Some of the activities on the schedule are tours of Pioneer Village, a sidewalk chalk art competition and a live chainsaw sculpture demonstration by Marina Cole of Chainsaw Spirit.

Brake says with plenty of space on the grounds it’s easy to welcome a lot of people host a lot of activities.

“We can do things on the far south end of the grounds in the field house with the farmers’ market and go all the way north to the grandstand and have lots of activities in there. So we’ve got things literally throughout the entire grounds,” she says.

After music from Foxx Worthee and the Chevelles beginning at 8 p.m., the traditional Canada Day fireworks will take place.

Brake can hardly contain her excitement about the end of the night.

“We’re going to shoot them off the north ends of the grounds as we usually do so they’ll come off the coulees so you should be able to get a good seat for them kind of wherever you are in Medicine Hat as long as you’re in that coulee area,” she says. “But we’ve got a really good show to put on for that and so we’re really excited to do fireworks this year.”

Brake also says there’s a Stampede concert announcement coming. You can hear the details tomorrow on CHAT 94.5 just after 8 a.m. on Tuesday.
