MEDICINE HAT, AB – A local high school student is sparking some attention.

Ethan Hawkness of Medicine Hat High School won the provincial level of a Skills Canada competition in welding. The Grade 12 student has been welding for the past four years.

It was Ethan’s first time competing in the Skills Canada competition.

The provincial event is normally held in Edmonton with thousands in attendance, but this year he showed off his skills virtually to win.

Ethan says he’s proud of his big accomplishment.

“It’s fun to make things and to build things you can make whatever you can think of,” Ethan said.

Ethan’s success qualified him to compete at the national level. The competition was held a few weeks ago and he will find out his results soon.

He plans to keep welding after graduation.
