Thursday night vigil will honour residential school victims

MEDICINE HAT, AB – A vigil will be held tonight (Thurs. June 3) at the Saamis Tepee to honour the 215 victims of the tragic discovery at a Kamloops residential school.

The vigil will begin at 7 p.m. and everyone is welcome to attend.

215 children’s shoes are placed at the Saamis Tepee to represent each child that was found.

The Miywasin Friendship Centre thanks the community for the amazing support and shoe donations.

They have exceeded their goal and the shoes will be donated afterward.

Organizers say the shoes will be set up for one week.

The Miywasin Friendship Centre also has volunteers selling orange t-shirts and 100 “Every Child Matters” stickers that were donated by The UPS Store #203 Medicine Hat. Organizers say t-shirt sales have been going well and are almost sold out.

All proceeds will be used to support further initiatives to bring awareness and healing regarding the residential school legacy.

Additionally, the teepee is lit in orange for 215 hours to remember the lives of each child.

Flags at all city facilities and schools are also being flown at half-mast.
