Job fair highlights local employment opportunities

Jun 2, 2021 | 4:28 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Job seekers had a chance to learn more about local employment opportunities today.

The YMCA held its 6th drive-thru job fair at the Cypress Centre.

About 75 jobs were available in the various industries that were featured.

The five employers on hand include Borea Construction, Paladin Security, Next Step Residential Services, Age Care, and Arrkann Trailer & RV Medicine Hat.

YMCA Employment Centre Manager Jodie Engbert says Southern Alberta has the highest unemployment rate in the province.

And they have been hosting job fairs a little more frequently to help people get back to work.

They hosted one last week in Brooks for JBS.

And she says with COVID restrictions starting to ease, she hopes more jobs will soon become available.

“Even within our centre, we haven’t been as busy with job seekers as we would typically see for this time of year. I’ve been with the agency for 16 years and definitely lower trends for this season than we would typically see in another year,” Engbert said.

Borea Construction was featured throughout the day. They are the largest renewable constructor in Canada right now. They construct wind and solar farms in southern Alberta and southern Saskatchewan regions.

They are looking to hire 40 people, anything from general labourers, health and safety advisors, superintendent, foreman, and lead hands.

Borea’s Talent Advisor Abby Clissold says they have doubled their projects in the last year.

They’re mainly hiring for the Whitla Wind facility located near Bow Island.

Right now they are building phases two and three.

She says it’s beneficial if applicants have a construction background or have worked in a similar industry.

“A lot of people tend to forget their certificates, so especially if they come from that industry. But something that we always look for is the interest in renewables. If you are interested in getting into renewable construction, I would definitely put that on your resume,” Clissold said.

She adds if you do not have construction experience they are willing to train.

You can still reach out to Borea by emailing jobs@boreaconstruction.com
