Bottle drive and barbecue for the Redcliff Legion this weekend

REDCLIFF, AB – The Redcliff Legion has seen its revenue drop over the past year, unable to rent out the venue and having to close the restaurant for long stretches of time.

To help make up some of that the Legion is hosting a bottle drive and grab-and-go barbecue this weekend.

You can drop off bottles at the legion parking lot from 12-7 p.m. on Saturday and 12-5 p.m. on Sunday or can call the office at 403-548-3217 to arrange for pick up.

“The barbecue and the bottle drive are basically just to help with the day-to-day costs right now. Things are slower, COVID’s taken a toll on us a little bit so proceeds from that will go probably into our general fund,” says membership secretary Nicole Pilon. “But as well as the bottle drive and the barbecue we’ll have our 50/50 table set up, there’ll be a membership table set up as well. And with the 50/50 what we do with that, a certain portion goes into the maintenance fund and then into a savings account as well.”

At the barbecue you can get a hamburger or hot dog, a bag of chips and a pop for $5.

Pilon says community support has been amazing the past year, but they’re ready to get back to normal as soon as possible and will need more support.

“We have our full restaurant, once we’re open we have dances, we have Friday night dances for the seniors we have kids dances, You can rent rooms for birthdays, weddings,” she says. “It’s a huge space people don’t understand that. And you don’t have to be a member to use the Legion. We recommend it of course because that money goes towards helping the veterans.”

Pilon says the Redcliff Legion currently has more than 300 in good standing members, which she calls a huge number for a little Legion.
