Medicine Hat fans sing about their Oilers playoff dream

May 20, 2021 | 3:11 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – When the Edmonton Oilers face the Winnipeg Jets in Game 2 of their opening-round series Friday night some of the loudest cheers might be coming from a Medicine Hat home.

“I’m a hundred per cent guilty of being the probably biggest fan in the family,” said Josh Johnson. “I’ve grown up loving watching the Oilers since I was a little kid since the Gretzky years and now that they have the players that they do, McDavid and Draisaitl and whatnot I’ve tried to especially with my boy here instill as much Oilers fandom as I can and it’s working.”

The Johnsons watch Oilers games together, something Josh says has been a bonding experience for them during COVID-19.

The family that watches together plays and sings together.

As the Oilers were closing in on a playoff spot about a month ago, Josh was thinking of ways to support his favourite team in the post-season.

Josh came up with the idea of a music video and rewrote the lyrics to “A Million Dreams” from the film “The Greatest Showman” into “An Oilers Playoff Dream.”

After about a month of planning, filming and editing, Josh posted the video to his family’s That Hockey Fam YouTube Channel this week, where it’s gotten lots of positive reviews.

Josh said it began as a way for friends and family to be able to see the kids, which they haven’t been able to do much recently.

“But for it to get the attention that it has it’s been really a blessing,” said Josh.

His daughters Arya and Ayla both sing and act in the video, his son Raylan acts and Josh sings. His son Rydar and wife Krista also appear.

The Oilers lost game 1 against Winnipeg on Wednesday, but the Johnsons are still predicting they’ll win it all this year.
