Preparing your plants and garden for snowfall

May 19, 2021 | 11:17 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – For those who spent the warm weather gardening or are planning to garden, the upcoming snow in our forecast may throw a wrench in those plans.

Art Van Dam, Owner of Windmill Garden Centre says he always recommends not planting until after Victoria Day.

He says we tend to get bad weather around the May long weekend.

Van Dam says anyone who has already embraced their green thumbs indoors, should keep their plants in the garage for now.

For those already planted outdoors, he says to cover them with blankets to protect them from the frost and snow.

“Watch the forecast and if it goes down to only to four or five at night, then it’s okay to take the blankets off,” Van Dam said. “Also, take the blankets off during the day if it’s not snowing and the sun is shining.”

According to Environment Canada, our region is expected to get 5 to 10 centimeters of snow tomorrow.
