Premium Sausage to open store in Medicine Hat

MEDICINE HAT, AB – A Seven Persons institution and a Medicine Hat favourite is expanding to the city.

Mark and Debbie Penner, owners of Premium Sausage, are opening a retail location on Trans-Canada Way in Medicine Hat at the old Shell gas station.

They hope to open on June 1.

Mark says it’s something they’ve been thinking about for quite a long time.

“We’ve been investigating it the last couple of years and then last spring with COVID coming in it was kind of an issue and we held off on it,” he said. “Then this place we saw it and we investigated and it was available and it was ready to go so here we are.”

Mark says the space didn’t need a lot of work for what they wanted to do. The high traffic street next to the highway was also a plus, says Debbie.

Mark and Debbie say the store will be retail only, allowing for a quick stop for customers to pick something up on the way home for supper.

“We’ll have our basics. We’ll have our basic farmer-style sausage, we’ll have our bacons, the deli product that we have, we’ll do the smokies and the garlic coil and the things we do in the other store,” Mark explains. “But a few of the things we’ll leave as special for there that you have to go there to get them. And we’ll have the core stuff here so that, you know, the people get a good feel of what we have.”

The store in Seven Persons will remain as is, say Mark and Debbie. Their sons Kurtis and Nathan will take care of the production at the main store so Mark and Debbie can focus on the new location.
