Fire department shares safety tips as weather warms

May 3, 2021 | 5:04 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat Fire Department wants to remind the public of fire safety tips as firefighters have already responded to park fires this year.

While fire pits are allowed, fire marshal Scott Hanelt says they must be approved, regulated and certified.

He says other fire hazards are barbecues, which are the cause of the biggest fires during the summer.

“People having barbecues too close to their home or under an enclosed deck. Some of the other things too are the maintenance of the barbecue,” Hanelt said. “Making sure you maintain your barbecue, checking it, checking your lines, checking your valves. Making sure there’s no leakage.”

Hanelt says carelessly flicking cigarettes causes multiple fires each year and asks people to ensure the cigarettes are out before discarding.
