Third Career Hat Trick

Captain Chyzowski completes hat trick in Tigers-Hurricanes finale

May 2, 2021 | 9:56 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – In his second to last game in Tigers stripes, captain Ryan Chyzowski put on a show to remember to close out Medicine Hat’s series with the Lethbridge Hurricanes.

Chyzowski recorded his third career WHL hat trick, guiding the Tabbies to a dominant 6-2 victory to take the rubber match in Lethbridge.

For the second time in three games, Medicine Hat took over the second period with three goals in the middle frame to eventually run away with the win despite a late ‘Canes push.

Eric Van Impe got the scoring started for the Tigers a little over 13 minutes into the contest, with a wrist shot from the point hitting a stick and fluttering over Lethbridge goaltender Jared Picklyk.

Hurricanes forward Ty Nash was able to tie it up at 1-1 just a few minutes later though, putting a long-range wrist shot on net which found its way through.

The Tigers’ strong play on the man advantage continued Sunday midway through the second period, as an Oren Shtrom shot deflected off Nash and into the Hurricanes net for the go ahead goal.

Shtrom wasn’t done there though, as he set up Noah Danielson for his third goal of the season six minutes later in what would eventually hold up as the game winner.

Chyzowski’s offensive explosion began just before the end of the middle frame as the fifth-year captain picked up on a Lukas Svejkovsky shot, burying the rebound to make it a 4-1 Medicine Hat lead.

He’d only need a little over two minutes to pot his second of the night in the third, putting home his 10th of the year past Picklyk.

Lethbridge began picking up the pace offensively in the final period and were able to close the chasm to 5-2 off a Jett Jones wrap around goal that was upheld by officials, but Chyzowski’s big night was capped off with an empty netter to seal the victory for the black and orange.

After registering his first goal and point on Saturday night for the Tigers, rookie forward Carlin Dezainde capped off his monster weekend with a two assist performance on Sunday.

Between the pipes, Garin Bjorklund earned his 10th victory of the season with 37 saves on 39 shots while it was a 34-save night for Picklyk.

Just one game remains on the 2020-21 WHL season for the 14-7-1 Tigers, as they will play host to the Edmonton Oil Kings on Thursday night at 7:00 pm in what will be the final junior game for veterans Chyzowski, Cole Clayton and Brett Kemp.
