MEDICINE HAT, AB- The Medicine Hat Public School Division is confirming a third active case of COVID-19 connected to River Heights Elementary.

In a letter to parents, the school division said Alberta Health Services has directed some students and staff to quarantine, as the school remains on alert status.

The school division said River Heights Elementary will remain open. A thorough investigation has taken place and all close contacts of the positive case have been directed to quarantine.

” We are confident, based on AHS guidance, that those who have not been directed to quarantine can attend school safely. Siblings and family members of close contacts are not required to quarantine; however, they are asked to monitor for any signs or symptoms of COVID-19,” the Medicine Hat Public School division said in a statement.

Enhanced cleaning and hand hygiene protocols are in place, and the school has worked with AHS to regularly build and update its cleaning practices.

” The daily health measures that we have in place at our school are effective in limiting the spread of COVID-19 and variants of concern. Although it is not possible for us to stop COVID-19 and the variants of concern from spreading in our schools, we are committed to working together to protect our school community, reduce exposure and limit the spread,” the letter read.

Parents and visitors of the school are asked to complete the Alberta Daily Health check daily prior to attending school. If symptoms are present, parents are asked to keep their children at home and complete the COVID-19 self-assessment or dial Health Link at 8-1-1.
