Medicine Hat’s newest power plant now under construction

MEDICINE HAT, AB – As the city continues to grow, so does the demand for power.

The new power plant will be built in the northern part of the city at Cousins West near Box Springs Road next to Unit 16.

Brad Maynes with the City of Medicine Hat says the additional electric power supply will benefit both residents and businesses.

“We have an obligation to provide reliable power 24/7,” Maynes said. “We are ring-fenced as it pertains to power here in the city. We are the only provider of electricity and under that regulatory obligation, we have to ensure we have enough power all the time.”

The new plant will also provide 50 to 70 jobs while under construction.

State-of-the-art technology is at the forefront of this new project and the highly efficient engine will minimize the amount of pollution put into the atmosphere.

Maynes says it’s important to have enough electricity for everyone.

The plant is expected to be done by the spring of 2022.
