Patios popping up across the city

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Since the Alberta government announced in-person dining is no longer allowed, many restaurants have set up temporary patios to get around this health measure.

Patio dining is allowed since it is outside and many restaurants are trying to give their guests the best in-person dining experience while abiding by health orders.

Ralph’s restaurant manager Brad Hayward says business has been good on the two days it’s been open and he is pleased to be able to stay open and offer in-person dining outside to guests.

“Well, we launched our patio Friday night, so we’ve only been the Friday and Saturday night but it was very successful, you know we’re keeping everyone six feet apart and we were actually packed both nights so that was great,” said Hayward.

Stephanie Jeffrey, who’s a part shareholder of Who’s On 3rd, says when they were open over the weekend business was good, but not quite as good as before. That’s partially due to the weather, she says.

“I prefer the in-person, I like that they gave us an option this time, but I prefer having my regular bar back. I’m not a fan of being cold, wearing my winter jacket to work isn’t what I signed up for, but I make it work.”

Some restaurants have put outdoor heaters in place but are recommending you dress for the weather and come prepared as it’s only the middle of April and the weather tends to change.
