School remains open; AHS says safe to attend

Positive case of COVID 19 at River Heights school

MEDICINE HAT — River Heights elementary in Medicine Hat is the latest area school to report a postive case of COVID 19.

Alberta Health Services informed the school of the positive case and directed some students and staff to quarantine for a specified time period.

The school remains open.

All close contacts have been identified and are already in quarantine.

The Medicine Hat Public School division says it’s likely the case may be a U-K variant strain, but there are increasing numbers of both the Brazil and South African COVID strains in Alberta too.

In a release, the public school division says it appears that the exposure was limited to a small group of students and staff and, based on AHS guidance, officials are confident that staff and students who have not been directed to quarantine can attend school safely.

Siblings and family members of close contacts are not required to quarantine; however, they are asked to monitor for any signs or symptoms of COVID-19.
