Downtown easter egg hunt cancelled for second straight year

MEDICINE HAT, AB- The Easter Bunny will not be paying a visit to the city’s downtown core this year.

This is the second straight year the event has been cancelled. Last year it was cancelled due to COVID-19.

The Easter Egg hunt, run by the CCDA has been happening downtown for several years drawing children and adults to the downtown core.

Jeremy Silver, chair of the CCDA confirms the event is cancelled indefinitely after
massive pushback from stakeholders who argued the costs outweighed the benefits. He further told CHAT News the decision to cancel had nothing to do with the petition to disband the CCDA.

“The cancellation of the easter egg hunt predates the petition to disband the CCDA by over a year. The CCDA speaks for the downtown stakeholders and was not receiving positive feedback about the long term benefits of the Easter Egg hunt. If the downtown stakeholders have a change of heart the board will always listen,” Silver said in a statement.

According to Silver, the event would bring in around 1300 people to the downtown core. That number, he said is based on headcounts at the events.

Going forward Silver said the CCDA is working on several new promotions to bring people to the downtown core. One of those initiatives is a dollar for dollar downtown dollars promotion. Details on the event are limited, but more information is expected to be released in the next few weeks.
