Polar Plunge raises $2,600 for Special Olympics

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Medicine Hat Police Service wrapped up donations for the annual Polar Plunge.

Officers raised over $2,600. The chilling event is a fundraiser for Special Olympics Alberta

This year’s Polar Plunge was done differently.

While it’s normally at the Family Leisure Centre, this year the Medicine Hat Fire Department sprayed down police officers with the hose.

Insp. Joe West says it was just as cold and just as traumatic as previous years, but it was all done for a good cause.

“Special Olympics is near and dear to law enforcement and is the official charity of the Alberta Association of the Chief of Police,” West said. “We had a couple of athletes join us at the venue to watch as spectators and it’s just a great, great event that they put on.”

Police have been supporting Special Olympics and the athletes for years.

West says it’s something they’ll keep on doing.
