Fast moving fire burning near Claresholm

Update 8 PM March 28

Vulcan, Alta – Vulcan RCMP are reporting that the fire near the Village of Carmangay now appears to be under control. The Municipal District of Willow Creek are working on their re-entry plan. If residents have any questions they are encouraged to contact the Municipal District Office.

Vulcan RCMP was supported today by many other RCMP detachments. There were injuries sustained as a result of the fire and all injured persons are being treated for their injuries. Over 5000 hectares were damaged. In addition to the fire, RCMP had to deal with 3 semi rollovers and 2 other collisions as a result of the high winds.

At this time all highways in the area are open.

UPDATE– According to The Town of Claresholm Facebook page, Highway 2 south of Claresholm is now open. Highway 520 east from Claresholm remains closed.

Power and natural gas service has been disconnected east of Claresholm. The town said crews are on site and are working to restore services as soon as possible.

An emergency reception centre has been set up for evacuees at the Claresholm Community Centre located at 5820 8th Street West.

Livestock is being directed to the Agriplex at 5950-4 Street West.

Update: Alberta Emergency Alert is urging residents in the area to prepare for a possible evacuation.

LETHBRIDGE, AB. — Around 1:30 Sunday (Mar 28) afternoon, the Town of Claresholm reported that Highway-2, south from of the outskirts of Claresholm had been temporarily closed due to a grass fire and an overturned semi.

As well, eastbound highway-520 is closed at Claresholm due to blackout conditions from blowing topsoil and debris.

A gusty wind created reduced visibility due to the fire and from photos posted to Facebook, it appeared there was more than one overturned semi.

Motorists are asked to avoid the region
