MEDICINE HAT, AB — Construction for Medicine Hat College’s multi-phase expansion is now underway.

The $8 million upgrade is called The Health, Wellness and Athletics Expansion project.

Phase 1, under construction now, will include three components.

A new weight room and cardio area, a simulation center for paramedic and nursing students to gain hands-on experience and a cultural hub for celebration and exploring indigenous events.

It’s expected to be ready for the winter semester early next year.

College president Kevin Shufflebotham says the wellness and cultural hub will be open to the public.

“Part of this is when we went through our strategic planning process, it wasn’t just about us, it was about how do we engage the region,” Shufflebotham said. “In fact, for the cultural hub, we’re partnering with the Miywasin Friendship Centre to offer new engagement opportunities.”

This is just the beginning of a large expansion planned for the college over the upcoming years.
