COVID-19 vaccines available at local pharmacies

REDCLIFF, AB – The province’s immunization program for the COVID-19 vaccine was expanded to community pharmacies the first week of March.

According to the health minister, that was limited to pharmacies in Calgary, Red Deer, and Edmonton because of vaccine supply and storage for Pfizer.

COVID-19 vaccinations are now available at five pharmacies in Medicine Hat and one in Redcliff.

Pharmacist and owner of Redcliff Pharmasave Rob Hozack says they are distributing the Moderna vaccine and they arrived on Friday afternoon.

And they didn’t know until that day that they were receiving them.

He says they started booking on Monday and it’s been a pretty crazy week.

The pharmacy received 300 vaccines and has been immunizing 60 people a day.

They will be done with that batch of vaccines on Tuesday with another 100 doses expected next week.

Hozack says he’s been answering a few questions about vaccine dose timing.

“When will I get the second shot? Some people are concerned that the guideline was 14 days but we’re not going to do the second shot until four months. I think that’s a good policy if we get those first shots first is a good way to do it. I think Alberta Health is right there.”

Albertans who were born in 1946 or earlier can book online to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, call a local pharmacy, or Health Link at 811.

When booking, Hozack says they are taking Alberta Health care numbers and date of birth.

“High demand, it’s going to be a crazy month, I’m looking forward to it. We’re all happy to put in extra work to make this go away,” Hozack added.
