St. Francis Xavier sports academy sees growth in second year

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The sports academy at St. Francis Xavier School is nearing the end of its second year and has seen significant growth since starting in 2019.

Fewer than 30 students were part of that first class, and now there are more than 40.

The academy is also expanding the sports students get to try out.

“We cycle through soccer, baseball, basketball and volleyball and we do explore days like this where we take them off-campus,” says teacher and academy instructor Kennedy Werre. “So far with COVID we’ve only done a few things like bowling and now we’re starting to get to do a few things with the restrictions being lifted.”

This week students are exploring karate and kickboxing at Karate-Do Academy.

As the only elementary school sports academy in southern Alberta, Werre says the skills the students are learning in Grades 4 to 6 through the academy will give them an advantage as they become more serious about sports.

“We’re getting these kids physical literacy skills and being active. They’re learning to play volleyball in Grades 4 to 6 so when they’re going to junior high, they’re getting ready to be able to go to those tryouts in Grade 7 ready to go so I think it’s awesome,” she says. “We’ve gotten really good feedback from students that have moved on and are ready for basketball and all that stuff.”

With a large Grade 6 class graduating this year more spaces will open up in the academy next year.
