MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Esplanade is still closed to the public, but it has big plans for this upcoming year.

Trampas Brown, Entertainment and Event Operations Manager, says they are anxious to welcome people back into the building.

With restrictions hopefully being eased in the upcoming weeks, the gallery is already being transformed.

Two big art exhibitions are currently in the works. First, is the popular School Art, which features pieces by students of all ages from Medicine Hat.

The other exhibit is the Black Gold Tapestry. A 67-metre hand embroidered piece of art by Calgary artist, Sandra Sawatzky. The Black Gold Tapestry tells a visual story of the oil and gas industry history.

The Esplanade is also looking forward to hosting dance festivals this year. Brown says even concerts and shows from last fall are being rescheduled.

“We’ve currently postponed John Wort Hannam as well as Michael Bernard Fitzgerald and a show with YukYuks Comedy,” Brown said. “So once we’re able to get people back in the theatre, we’ll be announcing new dates for those shows as well as a few more throughout the spring.”

The Esplanade is hoping to reopen the galleries pending the announcement of Step 3.
