Student dies after being stabbed at Leduc school

Mar 15, 2021 | 2:55 PM

A 17-year-old girl stabbed during a violent assault at a school just south of Edmonton has died.

According to RCMP, the assault happened at around 10 a.m. at Christ the King School, in Leduc which has about 350 students in grades 9 to 12.

Bob Young, the mayor of Leduc, says all schools in the area were locked down after the assault.

The teenage girl was transported to the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton in critical condition but died this afternoon as a result of her injuries.

Police say they arrested a 19-year-old male about two hours later and the lockdowns were lifted shortly afterwards.

The RCMP are now investigating the stabbing as a homicide and the Major Crimes Unit has taken over the investigation.

Given the tragic nature of this situation, the RCMP hopes that privacy will be afforded the students at the school
