MEDICINE HAT, AB – Candice Funk could be celebrating her first year in business with a handful of dragons – capital D Dragons to be precise.

Funk is the owner of Baking with Candice. She hosts a range of baking and cooking classes for all ages and had an audition with producers from CBC’s Dragons’ Den this week.

She applied so long ago she forgotten about doing it. That set off a whirlwind day and a half between the email from producers on Sunday and her Tuesday audition.

Funk feels it went well and is already looking ahead to the possible next step.

“It was a really good experience and I will definitely keep more things in mind I would like to say in front of the Dragons,” she said.

She did the audition in her store on the corner of Aberdeen Street and Fourth Avenue SE. She demonstrated everything she could for the producers and presented the way she would in front of the Dragons themselves.

Funk said producers told her she’ll get a call by the end of the month if she’s been selected to pitch to the Dragons. She would do that in Toronto between April 12 and May 2.

“I’ve never seen anything on the show like what I’m showing them so I hope that it’s going to catch their eye,” said Funk.

Funk planned to open Baking with Candice on March 17, 2020. The pandemic forced her to put the opening on hold but she has been able to slowly open and increase her classes since then.

She also found other ways to make money when the classes were restricted.

“My cookie decorating kits are a huge hit around Medicine Hat already as well as my baking subscriptions and my meal boxes So I have a few avenues that I’m trying to be creative throughout the restrictions.”

For now, she’s keeping under wraps the direction she’ll take Baking with Candice if she gets an investment from the Dragons.

No matter how that goes there’s a bright future for Funk and the business.

“I would like to keep a little bit of anticipation for all of Medicine Hat,” she said. “If it doesn’t go I am doing fairly well here and I can see Baking with Candice expanding regardless.”
