Highway One and Gershaw Drive intersection improvements in 2021

MEDICINE HAT — Alberta’s capital plan for this year includes improvements to the intersection of highways 1 and 3 in Medicine Hat.

The off ramp from the Trans Canada onto Gershaw Drive will be widened to provide dual left turn lanes and both interchange ramp intersections will be signalized.

As well, Alberta Transportation minister Ric McIver says there will be work along Gershaw Drive and 8th Avenue South West to improve traffic flow.

“The median on Gershaw Drive will be modified to introduce westbound left turn lanes to allow motorists to get out of the traffic flow” says McIver.

8th Avenue will also be widened and realigned to tie into Bomford Crescent south west.

Preliminary engineering continues on the South Saskatchewan river eastbound bridge.

McIver says they know they have work to do on the girders supporting the bridge.

” We do know girders for the Highway One structure has some fatigue cracking. There’s no immediate structural integrity but we do know we’re on the clock before structural integrity becomes a problem” according to the minister.

McIver says work will be done this year to repair girders on both the Box Springs Road and CPR overpass.

That will be done from beneath.

The minister says they hope these projects will have a minimal impact on traffic but when it comes to road work, “somebody’s always got to wait”.

That work could take 12 weeks to complete and will begin when the weather allows.
